Blog Post #1- Music Marketing

Music Marketing Project- The Brainstorming Process

Upon receiving the assigned genre for my group, our research primarily focused on the elements in the music industry that pertain to that category. Our genre was hip-hop, prompting us to investigate the most significant labels and related artists. Because most of our group was familiar with hip-hop, this process was the most interesting and simple part of this project. Although we had previous knowledge of the genre, the thorough research of the industry aspect taught us several "inner" details about the strategies and thought processes that artists carry out for maximum exposure and engagement with the world.
We were given 5 songs that pertained to the hip-hop genre and we needed to select one and create a music video with a portion of the song. As we repeatedly listened to each individual song, we would throw numerous simple, yet effective ideas that could work for every song and write down the best ones. The selection of the song for the video was undoubtedly the most challenging part of the whole project because my team and I had excellent ideas for each song, and we weren't sure which one would be best executed given the amount of time we had to film and edit the project. We eventually narrowed it down to two songs, and after expanding on both ideas, it became pretty clear that "Colors" by Black Pumas was the most appealing song and had the most creative elements for the video.

The next steps were to film the scenes with the appropriate elements of film production to deliver the music video's purpose as well as possible. Although I had strep throat and could not partake in the film process, this part consisted of lots of trial and error before arriving at the best visual, according to my teammates. The editing process was essentially what took the song and video to next level. By ordering and transitioning each shot in our desired manner, we were able to "marry" both pieces of media into one cohesive idea that provokes interpretation yet relates to the original meaning of the song. This project surely had its difficult moments, especially in the initial planning portion, but I truly think my teammates and I delivered a quality piece because of our relationship with the hip-hop genre.
